‘What can be done with the ongoing globalization of pain, insecurity, radicalization, multiculturalism and war?’

Originally from Kabul, social anthropologist Farida Ahmadi has studied the complex tapestry of peace and conflict in Afghanistan. During the Soviet occupation, she was jailed twice. Since 1991, Norway has been her home. She writes and participates in the international discourse on peace and women’s rights.

Farida Ahmadi holds a Master’s Degree in Anthropology from the University of Oslo. In Norway, Farida Ahmadi has carried out research on the health of immigrant women, and she has found that lack of recognition leads to pain and ill health. Farida Ahmadi is also engaged in promoting peace. One year ago, she published the book From War to Peace: Our Global Responsibility!

She published Silent Screams, a book on women’s struggle for recognition. The book was published in Norwegian by Pax Publishing in 2008. The cover was inspired by Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns. Silent Screams is now poised to be translated into French, Arabic and Cyrillic/Russian in 2025.

Information about Farida’s work

Farida Ahmadi, Originally from Kabul, Afghanistan, she is a social anthropologist by profession. Her journey has been marked by the complex tapestry of peace and conflict in Afghanistan. During the Soviet occupation, Farida was in jail twice. On 16 December 1982 she participates in the Tribunal Permanent des peuples in Paris. She was a witnessed to women in jail. Later on she traveled extensively with the resistance movement across the globe. During their travels, they visited the White House and met President Reagan. Later, Farida faced another period of jail in Pakistan in 1989. Since 1991, she became a refugee in Norway, where she continues writing and being an international speaker.

In 2006 she graduated from Oslo University as a social anthropologist. In 2007, she awared. Farida was granted a dissemination award from Womens University in Norway to write her PhD about Immigrant women´s reality in Norwegian society. As a result of this award, she wrote the book Silent Screams about womens need for recognition. The book was initially published in Norwegian at Pax Publisher in 2008.  The illustrator of the cover was inspired by Khaled Hosseini’s book “A thousand Splendid Suns”, and on the cover, they painted Farida in a pink dress painting a thousand stars. The best review was written by Karin Sveen .The cover of the second edition, published in 2013, was a picture of Farida when she was demonstrating in Pakistan, after which she was jailed.

Farida´s book in English, “Silent Screams” was published in 2015 at “Shah M Book CO” (ISBN: 9789936803503) in Kabul . The book “Silent Screams was covered by BBC Farsi. Farida Ahmadi translated her book in Perisan and was also published by Ameeri Publishing in 2019 in Afghanistan. The book was launched in October 2019 during the bookfair in Frankfurt, which Norwas was a guest country .

In 2016 presented her research in International metropolis conference in Nagoya. Two years later in 2018, Farida´s book has been turned into a physical theatre in collaboration with Norwegian artists and Japanese artists, where they performed both in Nagoya and Oslo, Norway. Farida´s new research  was ultimately published in Japanese in 2020. She dedicated her book to Dr. Nakamura who was killed in Afghanistan. Later this year in March, another production will be set up in Japan under the name «Piece of Peace” Afghanistan.

Farida´s new research in Norwegian, was published under the title “Fourteen years with Silent Screams”, Solum 2022 Solum Bokvennen.

In february 2024, the book was  released with the name “From War to Peace Our Global Responsibility, founteen years with silent scream” which has been launched in bookfair India At display Leaflet new book cover. She focuses on collective pain and suffering of Afghan people and immigrants, and in genral people in the world. Her focus is how to create peace and the need a essential reformation of UN because this mechanism is old and need a redical change. At the moment  Farida are doing research about Afghanistan war and also works as an international lecturer.
