Lorelou Desjardins: ‘A Frog in the Fjord’

Paris is just a couple of hours from Oslo, but the distance in culture is greater

than you would believe. So, what are the main differences between Norwegian

and French culture?

Lorelou Desjardins (b. 1983) is a French lawyer, blogger and author from

Marseille. She has worked for the environmental organisation World Wide Fund

Norway and the Rainforest Foundation.

In 2010, she moved to Oslo from Copenhagen, to work as a legal expert for the

Norwegian Human Rights Institution. Since 2013, she has posted regularly on

the blog called A Frog in the Fjord, which is also the title of one of her books. In

them, she explains how it is to live and work in Norway, and what needs to be

done to understand and fit into the Norwegian culture. Many everyday activities

such as food and mealtimes may become problematic.

She remembers her first job lunch with Norwegian colleagues: ‘Everyone had

knekkebrød (crispbread) with white cheese and slices of paprika, whereas I was

warming my boeuf bourguignon made with quite a lot of red wine.’
