Henie Onstad Art Centre
Alia Farid: Bneid Al Gar
Thursday, October 17
Alia Farid is a Kuwaiti-Puerto Rican artist born in 1985, who works with a range of media including textiles, drawing, film and sculpture. She is passionate about creating in a visual form the shared conversations among people and the ecologies they inhabit in a changing world of migration and challenges to nature caused by man.
The name of the exhibition, Bneid Al Gar, is Arabic for ‘land of tar’ and refers to Alia’s growing up in Kuwait, where large bruise-like stains of oil could be seen on the surface of the land. In her first exhibition in Norway, this winner of the Lise Wilhelmsen Art Award will showcase her handwoven and embroidered textile works as well as five sculptures inspired by public drinking fountains in the Arabian Gulf. Outside the museum are her artificial palm trees. Those, together with two of her films, highlight the effects of environmental degradation. This promises to be a fascinating tour.
