A Historical Walk Along Akersgaten: Norway’s Most Dramatic Street

September 24, 2024 @ 10:30 am - 2:00 pm

The Special Events Committee has the pleasure of inviting you to a guided walking tour through one of the most central streets of Oslo: Akersgaten. The walk starts just below the oldest church in Oslo, the medieval Gamle Aker Kirke, and ends at the Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget). Akersgaten reflects the capital’s multifaceted 400 years under Danish rule, as well as the city’s medieval roots.

The walk is only 1.5 kilometres long, and we shall stop at several places and learn about the interesting and exciting story of Oslo as the capital of Norway, and how its history connects with that of Norway as a nation.

Akersgaten has been called the ‘Fleet Street’ of Oslo, where all the major newspapers used to have their offices. Our guide, Liv Berit Tessem, will also give us some of that history; she used to work as a journalist in Aftenposten.

There are multiple coffee shops and cafés only a short walk down the rest of Akersgaten to Christiania Torv, close to Kontraskjæret near Akershus Festning.

Important: Please note that this is a walking tour. So you must be able to walk well and keep up with the group. Please wear good walking shoes and suitable outdoor clothing for the weather.

The duration of the tour depends on the extent of each stop, the number of questions, and so on. The tour may last 1.5-2 hours. We therefore recommend that you bring a drink and a snack (i.e. banana, energy bar or chocolate).
