SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE
A Guided Walk Along Akersgaten
Tuesday, September 23
The Special Events Committee has the pleasure of inviting you to a guided walking tour of Norway’s most dramatic street. Akersgaten is one of the most central streets of Oslo, and we shall start our tour right below the oldest church in Oslo, Gamle Aker Kirke (Old Aker Church), and end our walk at Stortinget (the Parliament). The street runs from Akershus fortress to what was once Aker
Farm by Old Aker Church and was part of the construction work undertaken by King Christian IV (†1648) after the city fire in 1642. It follows the old country road to Aker Farm.
The walk is approximately 1.5 kilometres long. We will hear about the rich and interesting story about Oslo as the capital of Norway as well as how the street’s history connects with that of Norway as a nation. Akersgaten is often referred to as the ‘newspaper street’ of Oslo, as many of the media houses have their offices here, and our guide will also focus on that history.
Our guide will be Liv Berit Tessem, who has worked as a journalist in Aftenposten and who is now an official Oslo-guide.
After the walk, we may stop at one of the multiple coffee shops and cafés close to Christiania Torv near the fortress.
N.B. Please note that this is a walking tour. So you must be able to walk well and keep up with the group. Make sure to wear good shoes and suitable outdoor clothing.
