SPRING BUS TRIP TO JARLSBERG MANOR (near Tønsberg)
and ÅSGÅRDSTRAND
Tuesday, May 20
The Special Events Committee invites you to join us on a bus tour to the Vestfold area, i.e. the countryside on the west side of the Oslo fjord.
We shall first visit the stately Jarlsberg Manor near the town of Tønsberg. The history of Jarlsberg stretches through many centuries. The Jarlsberg estate includes nearly 3700 decares (nearly 915 acres) decares of cultivated land, making it one of Norway’s largest farms. Jarlsberg Manor has been the home of the Wedel Jarlsberg family since 1683. The manor, now in Empire style, has undergone many changes over the centuries. Our guide will tell us the history and show us around this beautiful manor house. We will also look inside Sem Church, built around 1100 and situated by the estate, if the church is not in use.
After Jarlsberg, we will drive to the nearby coastal town of Åsgårdstrand to have lunch. Here we shall enjoy traditional Norwegian dishes at the Grand Hotel with its wonderful sea view. Åsgårdstrand is mostly famous for its connection with Edvard Munch. He had a house here – now a museum – overlooking the fjord. Munch spent many summers here. Pikene på broen (‘The girls on the bridge’) is one of his most well-known works. Many others were also painted in Åsgårdstrand.
But, there is another famous person who lives in Åsgårdstrand, namely Finn Schjøll, also known as ‘Flower-Finn’. Finn Schjøll became well-known to the public through his appearances on television programmes, first on NRK (The Norwegian Broadcasting Company).
Since 1996, he has worked for TV 2, responsible for the flower arrangements. Finn Schjøll has a flower shop in Oslo. He also decorates for events. He has designed glass vases for Hadeland and Magnor glass factories. His house is situated near the Grand Hotel. After lunch we will visit Finn Schjøll and his lovely garden. Finn will tell us about his work and life with flowers.
