The Special Events Committee has the pleasure to invite you to a guided tour at Oscarshall Castle at Bygdøy. This charming hall was built as a private summer palace, dedicated to the celebration of art, music, and poetry. It was constructed around the same time as the Royal Palace in central Oslo and was completed in 1852.
The architect of Oscarshall was Johan Henrik Nebelong, and leading Norwegian contemporaneous artists – including Adolph Tidemand, Hans Gude, Joachim Frich, Hans Michelsen, and Christopher Borch – were commissioned to decorate the interior.
Architect Nebelong regarded the park as an integral part of his overall design for the summer palace. The park and buildings were meant to complement one another, with romantic winding paths following the natural curves of the landscape.
Over the years, the paths and vegetation in the park changed. In recent years, considerable effort has therefore been made to recreate Nebelong’s original layout and restore the romantic park. The park around the summer palace is open to the public during the castle’s opening hours. No ticket is required to enjoy the gardens.
