SUMMARY:Diplomatic Salon "The Miracle Tea"
DESCRIPTION:Rooibos is South Africa’s miracle tea. Its secrets were known to its local Khoi and San people for centuries. From the leaves they made a cure-all tonic that helped people from cradle to grave – a remedy for all the wears and tears of life. Rooibos is not just a drink. It’s part of South African culture. It is a way of life. \nThe yellow flowers and needle-like leaves of the Rooibos bush… \nIf nursing mothers had difficulty feeding the baby\, Rooibos in a bottle was a good substitute. Children drank it with honey. It was an antidote to anything and everything – fever\, colic\, dehydration\, inflammation\, headaches\, rashes\, burns. \nIt’s good for adults too. The red-coloured Rooibos herbal tea has minerals and nutrients that can lower blood pressure\, cancer risk\, stress\, hypertension\, and diabetes\, while improving bone health and immunity. It is rich in compounds like polyphenols\, antioxidants and flavonoids – also found in red wine – which is good for the heart. Rooibos offers these health benefits without the tannins found in wine\, the calories in nuts or the caffeine in other teas and coffee. It’s a safe drink for children and pregnant women. Being a caffeine-free tea means no sleepless nights for those sensitive to caffeine. \nRooibos (pronounced ROY-boss\, meaning ‘red bush’) is exported to over 50 countries. It is multi-purpose – as hot or iced tea\, in desserts\, cookies\, cocktails and cosmetics – in cleansers\, moisturisers and anti-aging creams. \nIn 2021\, the EU granted Rooibos ‘Protected Designation of Origin’ status. To get this honour\, a product must be a regional specialty\, originating and processed in a specified geographical area.  It is the only African product to win this status. PDO items include Parmigiano Reggiano cheese\, Champagne and Kalamata olives. \nPhotos: Rooibos Council \nAmbassador Kotze will give us an overview of the history of Rooibos and how it is embedded in South African culture. Her talk will be followed by a Q and A session. Refreshments will be served – including Rooibos tea\, sweet and savoury snacks\, desserts and Rooibos infused cocktails. \nVENUE:     The South African Ambassador’s Residence \nTIME:        14:45 (for 15:00) \nIf you wish to attend\, please email: anitapratap@hotmail.com. \nFEE: NOK 50.- for a gift. Preferably by bank transfer to 1600 40 36631 or NOK 55.- by VIPPS to 591747.  Please pay after your seat has been confirmed. \nThe address of the venue will be emailed to the attendees. \nAnita Pratap \n  \n
